Community
Material: ceramic
13" × 5" × 12"
I am an emerging ceramic artist studying at Sheridan College and was recently awarded the Untapped Emerging Artist award from Toronto Artist Project. In 2009, I embarked on a three-month residency in India with Mansimran Singh, student of iconic British potter, Bernard Leach. No stranger to the arts, I have over twenty years' experience as a manager in the non- for-profit arts sector. I also continue to practice as a freelance arts journalist.
Community is a playful sculptural piece that speaks directly to the history and context of Edmond Place —
its genesis in the ashes of fire and the community spirit that encircles its creation. The red clay mirrors the materials from which bricks are fashioned,
and the linked rings suggest cooperative community engagement. The piece moves and shifts organically, echoing the music of a multiplicity of voices.
