Paraisopolis, Sao Paolo
Material: linoprint
26” × 20”
About the Work
I have been exploring images of home and place in my drawing and printmaking. As I keep looking however, I am inevitably struck by the stark extremes of material space that exist in the world, and so am now documenting — from a distance — places of urban congestion and saturation. This print is from a varied edition of linocuts based on images from Paraisopolis, a large favela community of Sao Paolo.
About the Artist
Phyllis Gordon’s early involvement with visual arts came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, studying in Vancouver, London and Montreal. Following this with a many year break to pursue a legal career, she has gradually resumed her art practice. She has exhibited in Drawing 2010 at the John Aird Gallery in Toronto and participated in two group shows in 2008, at the Toronto School of Art and the Oakville Town Hall.
