Growing Community

photography, mixed media, acrylic

About the Work

People, like trees, need the support of a larger community. In Growing Community, the photograph of trees in an urban setting portrays their strength and the shelter they can provide. The drawings of the tree's roots contrasts this by depicting their fragility. Roots, like humans, require a stable, nourishing foundation with space to grow. Having a consistent home allows both roots and people to take hold of a foundation that will eventually support a freestanding, independent tree.

About the Artist

Pam Lostracco has been inspired by travel ever since she participated in an exchange program in Scotland while enrolled at the Ontario College of Art and Design. After graduation, she began her graphic design career working at studios in Toronto, punctuated with trips to Central America and Japan. In 2005, she took a year to travel throughout Southeast Asia and New Zealand and worked there with local artists, documenting their art, cultures, and environments with photographs and sketches. Pam currently works in Toronto.
