About the Work

The world is filled with structures, some forgotten and others well-loved. What stories do these buildings have to tell? Why is the human race so obsessed with erecting these monuments of metal and brick - and why do we so carelessly abandon them when they are no longer needed? Exploring the urban landscape, I am hoping to bring the documentary power of the camera to Toronto's hidden areas.

Churches have long been places of sanctuary where people could take refuge. There are fewer and fewer sanctuaries these days, as evidenced by those we see living on our streets. And even of those buildings that remain, so many are neglected, as are many members of our society. Whether it is structures or human beings, we need to question what it is that causes us to forget. To turn away and forget.

About the Artist

Laurin Jeffrey is a real estate agent and a photographer, blending the two passions in his art. Selling condos and lofts, he is very cognizant of the pace of development in the city. Spending many years in a small town, he saw old farms left to rot. It was these old barns and silos that piqued his interest in the decayed. During college, photography drew him in and led him to marry structures with the camera's ability to document. Now exploring the urban landscape, he is hoping to bring the visual power of the camera to society's hidden areas.
