Agnes Brych

Solitude

oil on canvas; custom pine frame

About the Work

This painting is inspired by a photograph I took while visiting my hometown of Warsaw, Poland. A homeless woman on a sidewalk in the historical district, a spot where locals and tourists gather to admire the architecture of century old castles, dine in fine restaurants, and visit the numerous galleries.

The image of this woman is a harsh reality for us to face. In the eyes of a passerby she does not exist. We would rather look at beautiful paintings on a wall than a woman trying to survive on the street. She represents an ugly reality we prefer not to see.
