Rooms

steel, found objects

About the Work

Bird, mouse and hornet nests are nature's shelters. But from what basic elements do people make shelters? Rooms is my assemblage of natural and manmade materials, using bed springs as apartments/compartments for the basic elements used in human shelters: straw and cloth for warmth; door hardware for the luxury of privacy; and solid roofs to keep the rain off the fortunate. Spray paints add colour and stability to an otherwise rusty and fragile environment.

About the Artist

Lisa Binnie is a sculptor and photo-based artist who explores urban and rural landscapes, collecting the found objects she discovers. Later, selected pieces from her extensive collection of objects are woven into steel sculptures ranging in size from several inches to several feet high. Lisa also creates one-of-a-kind functional garden art and her photo-based work depicts unusual variations on traditional landscape photography. Lisa teaches photography at Toronto Image Works and the Haliburton School of Art.
