Linked Together

classroom materials

About the Work

Linked Together is a school shelter that is a symbol of a welcoming, warm and safe environment. The piece was created entirely out of classroom materials. The children had to figure out how many paperclips long the chain links needed to be for the walls. The base is florist foam covered with tinfoil. Bamboo sticks frame the structure and pipe cleaners created the roof with a pencil for support. The Canadian flag was a 'must' as the shelter is 'made in Canada!' The people are self-portraits of each student in the class. They are glued in pairs on Popsicle sticks to represent partnership and teamwork. The different colours of popsicle sticks represent a diverse community. The chalkboard was created to communicate the message 'Linked Together!'

About the Artist

The art piece evolved as a result of the students' ongoing awareness of both local and global communities. It is a reflection of the student's learning about, giving to and helping others. The students have also provided support for the Children's Wish foundation and Project Love.
